This scene is from our living room, which is set up a lot like a very comfortable, livable temple. We find ways to consciously make our environment sensual.
My partner Russell and I share a philosophy of life: that living life is an art. It encompasses work, creativity, food, travel, play, how we dress, our self expression, our home spaces, how we live our days, as well as lovemaking. We are not content to simply trudge through it unconsciously, but prefer to make each slice of it as rich, fulfilling, and exciting as possible.
If wearing something special will add a bit of expressiveness to our evening, we'll wear it. Russell even let me put Johnny Depp eye makeup on him one night, and he looked hot! Our emails to each other are works of art. (He's a published author of thirty years.) Building a bonfire in the yard and lying there on thick comforters and pillows watching the clouds race across the full moon is more appealing to us than watching television, although curling up together with a good movie is nice at times.
Our concept of Tantra is "making an intentional art out of making love." To make it as special, magical, deep, sensual, intense, loving, caring, appreciative, and ecstatic as possible, whether it's simple and spontaneous, or planned and ritualistic. It's the antithesis of routine, unconscious, unimaginative sex. It's beyond just doing what the animals do, although there's certainly room for that too. Don't be intimated by talk of church, theatre, ritual, or celebration when it comes to sex. You don't have to try anything you don't feel comfortable with or wouldn't enjoy. But sometimes you don't know till you try!
You'll begin with easy things, like that basic element of Tantra-- gazing soulfully into your lover's eyes as you sit in this powerful field of resonance and let it lift you up. It's that easy.
Tantra is intentional play, intentional ritual, a way of approaching sexuality as something so profound that it deserves as much careful attention as any other special endeavor.
